With the canoe on the beach and turned on its side, using the two paddles as legs, Mike was able to put the large town that he always kept in the canvass bag over the edge of the canoe and paddles so that they had somewhere to be away from prying eyes. Once settled and Nann's bag in the shade, she removed her skirt and top ready for the water, all Mike had to do was remove his shirt, he was in his costume, running into the water hand in hand, they played, they splashed each other, after some time, Nann said that she would like to lay on a towel next to the canoe and get some sun, Mike stayed in the water alone, he liked to swim away from the shallows into deep water, then sprint back to the beach, he did this two or three times. Mike was now laid on the beach, his lower half in the water, his head on the sand, he closed his eyes, his head going round in a total spin, what with the exercise coming up, he also had thoughts of becoming a married man and a wife to look after, all these things were almost making him dizzy. It was then, he realised he was not alone, he opened his eyes and looked up, Nann was kneeling alongside him in the soft sand. "Are you alright love," she asked, Mike sat up he looked at her. "I think so," he said. Nann stood up and taking Mike's hand said. "Come on, let's have something to eat.
Sat under the shade of the canoe and towel, Mike and Nann ate there picnic lunch of egg sandwiches, sponge cake and a flask of coffee made with tinned milk. "Tell me, love." Nann asked, "Did you fall asleep at the water's edge." Mike looked at her. "No love I was just deep in thought." Nann's face told Mike she was worried, Mike leaned over and kissed her. "There is nothing wrong," he said. "I was just thinking about the exercise over the coming weeks, but I was also thinking, would I be a good husband for you." Nann looked at Mike. "Are you having second thoughts," she asked. "No love, don't even go down that road," Mike said holding her hand. "I love you deeply, I want you in my life, I just worry, am I good enough for you." " Listen to me you crazy loveable man," Nann said. "And get this into that head of yours. I fell in love with you the day you sat beside me on the school bus, it was my very first day, and nobody said a word to me, not even good morning, then you got on and sat beside me, and when you decided to rename me Nann because your name was Mike, and as you said Maureen Ann was too hard to remember, I thought you were very funny, but also good looking as boys go, and every time you called me by the name you had given me, I would get goosebumps all up my arms and down my back
Every day on the bus we sat and talked, then one Friday afternoon some three months later you took my hand and lead me into a side street, and on a seat outside the local market, you kissed me. That kiss meant everything in the world to me, and I knew, from that moment on you were the only boy I wanted to be with, I gave you my most precious possession, which you took with my love. We have grown together, from children to teenagers, and I know that we have the love and the strength to go all the way. It's like mummy and daddy said the other night, it's like a tree, we at the moment are a, well a sapling, we only have a few roots, but those roots are strong, and will ger stronger. I promise you." Mike had listened to what Nann had said, and the more he thought about it, the more he realised he was looking for problems, problems that weren't even there, they were all in his head and put there by his own crazy thoughts. Mike looked at the love of his life. "Can you forgive a fool," he said. Nann smiled. "Not a fool," she said. "Just a future husband who is wondering what is over the horizon. But believe me, love, what is waiting for us, is not only beautiful, but totally amazing, and will last a lifetime."
Mike looked at his watch, it was almost three. "Do you want another swim, or should we head for the ringbolt." Nann looked at Mike, a twinkle in her eye. "Let's head for the ringbolt," she said. Mike knew that by doing that, would mean an hours pleasure. As Mike came from under the towel and stood on the sand, Nann called. "Hang on a minute, I have to put all this lot away." A couple of minutes later Nann crawled out from under the towel and stood up, Mike then put everything back into the canoe, and the two of them dragged her into the water, he helped Nann into the canoe, then pushing away from the beach into deep water, Mike climbed in. With the sail up and the breeze filling it, they headed out, crossing towards the bastion wall they noticed that the swell was getting a little more intense.
Tied up to the ringbolt Nann asked Mike if it was possible for them to make love with there costumes on, but as they sat watching the swell, and the fact that every wave was hitting the bastion wall and then bouncing the canoe a second time, they realised that this would be both dangerous and stupid. Mike grabbed for the canvass bag and placed it behind his head, then laying down in the bottom of the canoe, he asked Nann to turn round so that she was facing him, then laying her body on top of his own, he said. "Right lay there and let's enjoy what we have." You're like a lumpy mattress." Nann said, but she still kissed him and ran her fingers through the hair on his chest. "I wish this water wasn't so choppy," she said as she pushed her body into his. I'm feeling really..."Mike stopped her with a kiss then looked into her eyes. "I know what you need," he said and bought his open hand down on Nann's left cheek. Nann squealed. "That hurt," she said. "It was meant too," Mike answered. "You know very well, if we made love out here, you would end up pregnant, and we made a promise to both our parents that we would practise safe sex until we were married." Nann looked down at Mike, then kissed him. Sorry love." They stayed tied to the ringbolt for about half an hour, but it was getting a lot rougher, the bows of the canoe were dipping under the water at every second wave, so they both decided to make a move and head for home. The run back was quite hairy, trying to cross into Msida creek was not a good idea, so they decided to head into Peita creek, then head back again turning into Msida creek as they did, they noticed that Msida creek had no swell, so by doing the planned turn, they would, for a short time have the swell at the bows, then a clear run down Msida creek. It did take a little bit longer, but as they said afterwards Safety wise it was there best option.
With the canoe now safely stowed in the boatyard and the cover over it, Mike and Nann made their way to the flat, however, Nann was still complaining about the slap Mike had given her in the canoe for wanting unprotected sex. As they headed up the two flights of steps to the flat, Mike being Mike gave Nann a tap on her bottom as she went up every step, so that by the time they had gotten to the front door, Nann's beautiful rear was a pinkish red colour, and Nann, as she said later. "You really do love me, don't you." "I do," Mike said. "But I don't want my future wife putting our future happiness in jeopardy, and breaking promises that we both made to our families." Mike then gave Nann's bottom one last tap, Nann turned and stepped into his arms, she kissed him. "I promise, I will never do anything like that again." In the kitchen, Grace was getting dinner ready, Nann joined her mother to give her a hand whilst Mike joined Roger in the lounge. Mike could hear some of the conversation coming from the kitchen, and as he looked up, he could see Nann showing her mother her bottom. "Well." he heard Grace say. "You must have deserved it." "I did mummy," Nann said. "I just didn't think he would do it." "And do you love him any less," Grace asked? "Oh no mummy, I still love him, and it's such a deep love that I feel for Michael. I have never felt anything like it before, it feels so wonderfully right, when I'm near him, I tingle all over, and when he touches me, well, its a feeling..I cannot describe." "Well daughter of mine," Grace said. " You feel about Michael as I felt about your dad." "But mummy," Nann asked. "Don't you feel the same now?" "Of course love," Grace said. "Those feelings never go away, you just need to control them."
Nann wanted to know more, needed to know more. "How can you control your feelings." Grace looked at her daughter, she had a motherly smile on her face. "Darling, at this precise moment, all you want to do is fall into bed with your young man, correct." "Yes," Nann said. "I want him to make mad passionate love to me, I want his child, I want him." "And that's good," Grace said. "But you cannot stay in bed for the rest of your lives, there is work to do, washing, ironing, cooking and cleaning, and I am afraid to say, all these things take presidents over romping around in bed."
Nann carried the plates into the lounge and put them on the table, Roger opened a bottle of wine, and Grace bought in two large dishes, one with roast potatoes and the other with cabbage, carrots and runner beans, on everyone's plate were three slices of roast beef and a quarter of a very large Yorkshire pudding. Nann went back into the kitchen and brought in the grave which she put in the middle of the table. "Well, ladies," Mike asked. "Have you sorted out the world's problems?" Grace smiled. "I think we have, but I think we need to talk about your actions. If you love Maureen as much as you say you do, then smacking her must be done with love." "Oh, it was," Mike said, he looked at Nann. "You know how I feel about you, don't you, and I would never do anything to really hurt you, but I did say.." Nann put her fingers to his mouth to stop Mike saying any more. "I accept what you did, and it's now forgotten let's forget the whole thing and enjoy our Sunday dinner." Roger was looking on, wondering what the hell was going on and what everyone was talking about, but Grace said she would explain it yo him later.
